欢迎收听VOA学习英语栏目的《词汇掌故》。
Now, the VOA Learning English program Words and Their Stories.

本节目会介绍英语中词语和表达的来源,以及如何使用它们。
On this show, we explain where words and expressions in the English language come from,

而如何使用对学习说英语的人来说可能是更重要的。
and -- probably more important for those learning to speak English -- how we use them.

今天的节目伴随着bang(砰)的声音开始咯。
Our show today starts off with a bang.

没错,这是爆炸时会发出的声音。
Yes, that was the sound of an explosion.

我刚才说伴随着bang(砰)的声音开始,其实是想说节目一开始就有许多让人兴奋之处,能量满满。
When I said the show will start with a bang, what I meant to say is that it will open with a lot of energy and excitement.

这就是短语“with a bang(精彩地,热气腾腾地)”的用法。
That is how we use the phrase "with a bang."

既然已经说到这儿了,我们就来聊聊“explosive”这个形容词吧。
But since we are here, let’s talk about "explosive" (an adjective).

explosive可以用来形容事件或者问题很有可能突然发生,猝不及防。
Events or issues that are "explosive" are likely to happen suddenly and violently.

这个词形容人的时候是说某人会突然变得暴力。
And explosive people can be suddenly violent.

有一些词经常跟explosive一起搭配出现。
There are a few words we often use with "explosive."

了解这些词汇组合是件好事儿,主要原因有二。
These word pairings are good to know for two main reasons.

原因1:这种现成的说法让词汇选择变得更简单了。
One: they are "go-to" terms that make word choice easier.

原因2:大家的口语听起来会更加自然,更像英语是母语的人。
And two: Your spoken English will sound more natural, more like a native speaker.

有很重要的一点需要知道——并非所有与explosive有关的搭配都是贬义。
It is important to note that not all "explosive" pairings are bad.

比如,“explosive laugh”就不是暴力的笑。
An "explosive laugh," for example, is not violent.

这种笑只是很突然、很大声而已。
It is simply laughter that happens suddenly and loudly.

此外,如果一家公司经历了“explosive growth”,那就意味着这家公司在短期内的增长速度比预期要快。
And if a company experiences "explosive growth," the business grows greater than expected and in a shorter amount of time.

不过,总体来说,explosive这个词所形成的组合都跟不好的事情有关。
But generally speaking, we use "explosive" word pairings when talking about bad things.
