Most experts note that it’s best to start small.

那么,比较好的第一步是思考单个的单词怎么说。
So, a good first step is to think in individual words.

看看自己周围,
Look around you.

大家能看到什么?
What do you see?

试着在脑海里叫出周围物体的名字。
In your head, try to name each object in your surroundings.

另一种练习方式是托马斯和欣肖都推荐的——在脑海里描述不知道怎么说的词。
Another exercise that both Thomas and Hinshaw suggest is describing in your mind objects you don’t know the words for.

托马斯说,举个例子——假设你想不到garage(车库)这个词。
An example would be if you couldn’t think of the word garage, Thomas says.

如果你看自己房子的时候看到了车库,但你想不到这个词用英语怎么说,那么你可以说“我会把车放在这个地方里。”
If you’re looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can’t think of the name in English, you can say, ‘The place inside where I put my car.’

或者你也可以说,“这个地方离我的房子很近,
Or you can say, ‘It’s next to my house.

我会把东西存放在这里。”
I keep things there.’

下一种练习方式是思考简单的句子。
The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences.

比如,如果你坐在公园里,你可能会自言自语说,“今天天儿真好”以及“有人在跟朋友们做运动。”
For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.”

Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.

专家还推荐了一种练习方式是——描述日常活动。
Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily activities.

做这个练习有几种方法。
There are a few ways to do this.

托马斯让初级阶段的学生用动词的一般现在时来描述自己的一天。
Thomas asks his beginning-level students to describe their day using the simple present verb form.

所以,他们可以在脑海里想一些句子,比如“我穿上衬衫”以及“他开车公交”。
So, they would think to themselves things like, “I put on my shirt” and “He drives the bus.”

还有一些专家认为,我们早上醒了之后可以在脑海里制定计划。
Other experts say you can mentally make plans in the morning when you wake up.

This would require other verb tenses.

所以需要的熟练程度稍微高一些。
So the skill level is a little higher.

Now, let’s move to thinking in conversation.

When you do this, you are imagining yourself speaking to someone else.

自己问问题并思考如何回答。
You are asking the questions and thinking of replies.

在做这些练习的时候,肯定会有一些词或者短语是我们不知道的。
For all of these exercises, there will of course be words and phrases that you do not know.

所以有时候就需要一本词典。
So, at some point you will need to use a dictionary.

如果你的熟练程度足够高,你可能就会考虑用英英词典。
If your skill level is high enough, you might consider using an English-to-English dictionary.

欣肖建议,每天只需要写下5-10个新单词和短语就行了。
Hinshaw suggests writing down just five to 10 new words and phrases each day.

做这些练习应该花多长时间呢?
So, how much time should you spend on these exercises?

托马斯认为,每天做一点练习就好。
Thomas says do a little every day.

所以,重要的是——每天都做,反复做,一点一点做。
So when you’re doing it every day, over and over again, little by little, that’s the key.

因为当某件事情成为一种习惯之后,无需思考就能想到,甚至在自己都还没意识到的时候,就已经真地在用英语思考了。
Because, when you make things a habit, then it just pops up into your mind without thinking and then, before you know it, really, you’re thinking in English.
