本周我们将回答蒂娜在电子邮件中提到的问题。
This week we answer a question we received in an email from Tina.

她写道:我只是想知道如何在实际情境中使用单词"borrow" 和 "lend"。
She writes:I just want to know how to use the words "borrow" and "lend" in a situation.

"Could you lend me a pen?" (“你能借给我一支钢笔吗?”)或" Can I borrow your pen?"(“我可以借你的钢笔吗?”)这样说对吗?非常感谢。
Is it correct to say, "Could you lend me a pen" or " Can I borrow your pen" Thank you very much.

对于许多英语学习者来说,这两个词是个麻烦。
These two words are a source of trouble for many English learners.

为什么呢?
The reason?

它们的含义大致相同,但每个词的动作方向却不同。
They have about the same meaning, but each word’s action goes in different directions.

“Borrow” 指从别人那里拿走某样东西,明白你还会把它还给那个人。
“Borrow” means to take something from another person, knowing you will give it back to them.

“Lend”指给别人某样东西,并希望把拿回它。
“Lend” means to give something to another person expecting to get it back.

所以你问的这两个句子都是正确的。
So the sentences you asked about are both correct.

选择使用“borrow” 还是 “lend” 取决于哪个方向对你更重要。
Your choice of “borrow” or “lend” depends on which direction is more important to you.

想象一下你自己处于这个画面中间。
Imagine yourself in the middle of the picture.

你“borrow”(借入)的任何东西都会移向你。
Anything you “borrow” moves toward you.

你"lend"(借出)的东西都会远离你。
Things you "lend" go away from you.

请注意,经常跟随这两个动词的介词是不同的。
Notice that the prepositions that often follow the verbs are different.

我们从某人那里借,用 “borrow from”,但我们借给某人,用 “lend to”。
We borrow from someone, but we lend to someone.

蒂娜,假设我们两个去购物。
Let’s say you and I go shopping, Tina.

我需要在收据上签名,但没有笔。
I need to sign my name on a receipt, but I do not have a pen.

所以我问你,“我可以借支钢笔吗?”
So I ask you, “Can I borrow a pen?”

我选择用“borrow”,因为我考虑这个动作与我有关。
I chose “borrow” because I am thinking of the action as it relates to me.

你是我的好朋友,所以你把笔借给我。
You are a good friend, so you lend me the pen.

我忘了笔是你的,把它放在我的包里。
I forget it is yours and I put it in my bag.

后来,我们遇到了一位好朋友,她想要你的电子邮件地址。
Later, we meet a good friend and she asks for your email address.

你在包里找,但没有笔!
You search in your bag, but – no pen!

你想,“我借给了吉尔钢笔。
You think, “I lent Jill my pen.

她并没有把它还给我。”
And she didn’t give it back to me.”

现在你正在考虑你的动作。
Now you are thinking of the action that you did.

所以,你可以问我,“吉尔,你还记得我借给(lent)你的那支笔吗?
So, you can ask me, “Jill, do you remember that pen I lent you?

我现在需要它。”
I need it now.”

我忘了还笔,感到很抱歉。
I feel bad that I forgot to return the pen.

我说:“对不起,蒂娜!
I say, “Sorry, Tina!

我忘了我(和你)借笔了。
I forgot that I borrowed it.

给!”
Here you are!”

注意:人称代词,如“me”、 “you”、 “him”和“others”都不会出现在动词“borrow”之后,
Be careful: personal pronouns like me, you, him and others never come after the verb “borrow,”

但是用在“lend” 之后是正确的,比如“Lend me a dollar for some ice cream.”(“借给我一美元买冰淇淋”)
but it is correct to use them after “lend,” as in, “Lend me a dollar for some ice cream.”

希望这能帮助你理解“lend” 和“borrow”。
I hope this helps you understand “lend” and “borrow.”
